All About Podiatry 101 – What You Need To Know

Podiatry is a branch of medicine that revolves around the food and the ankle. Apparently, there is an entire universe found in the lower extremities that warrant a totally separate study in medical school. If you are having problems with your foot, if you are feeling any pain, or if you feel funny in that part of your body, the first thing you need to do is look up Google for a local podiatrist.

What can you expect from a podiatrist? First things first, he will examine your foot for any obvious signs of dis-ease. Then there’s going to be some detective work done to determine exactly what is happening in that area so that remedies can be prescribed.

You would be surprised to know that there are actually many sub-practices in podiatry, including surgery, orthopedics, sports medicine, podiatric neurology, diabetic podiatry, and forensic podiatry, among others. For a full list of sub-specializations, make sure to check out the Podiatry page on Wikipedia.

If you have a general feeling of discomfort in your foot and/or ankle, you can go to a general podiatrist first. Depending on the condition, you might need surgery or medicine.

If you want to search for foot doctors in your area, do a search on Google. Depending on where you live, you might have one or several doctors practicing. The numbers are not as important as the experience of the doctor.

Podiatrists typically have private practices, although there are those that are based in hospitals and other healthcare institutions. Before they become officially foot doctors, they need to complete four years of study at an accredited podiatric medical school, after which comes four-year hospital-based residency.

No matter where they graduate from and where they take up residency, podiatrists are licensed to practice anywhere in the United States, unlike lawyers whose practice are limited to the state they are allowed to practice in.

How much does it cost to consult with a foot doctor? While we do not know exact figures, we do know that the average professional earns $188,000. If that does not tell you that they are expensive, we don’t know what will. In any case, you would be glad to know that podiatric work is covered by insurance.

Take note, though, there are limitations on coverage as with all things insurance. If you want to know the extent of your coverage, make sure to check with your insurance provider.

Podiatry is a dynamic practice and there is actually an organization for podiatrists all over the country. This ensures that no matter which doctor you consult with, you will be getting the best care possible.

Not all podiatrists are members of the country’s podiatric organization, but to be on the safe side, it would be better if you consult only with a doctor who lives up to the standards of the profession.

Consulting with a podiatrist can be done alongside getting treatment from non-medical practices like reflexology.
